Top 5: Overrated authors in fiction.

Overrated authors: Before I start off this list, I would like to add that I mean no disrespect to these authors. Their names seem to pop up in any given opportunity on Facebook groups, and other social media discussions, or articles.

 Over Rated Authors

James Patterson: His stories have short chapters that make a fast-paced and an easy read. I’ve read the Honeymoon I thought it was great. I followed up with the Quickie, which I couldn’t finish, and You Been Warned which was Okay. I’m done reading his books for now, as they seem to follow the same pattern, but they sell like hotcakes, even though he doesn’t write his own books but contributes to them.

Overrated Authors

Nicholas Sparks: I’ve read the Notebook and The Choice and they bored me to death. When I finished the Notebook, I threw the book across the room. (I don’t have the tendency of throwing books mind you) Then I read The Choice because it came highly recommended. It was as if I was reading the same book. All of his books follow the same plot line, characters, and settings.

Overrated Author

 J.K Rowling: You must be living under a rock if you haven’t heard of her. I love Harry Potter and I love her Detective Cormoran Strike crime novels that she writes under the pen name of Robert Galbraith even more. I love her imagination. Not the first author to write about wizards, but she invented this new world with one of the most beloved characters and the most feared villain. She is to be respected for what she achieved, and I admire her for that but she is everywhere.

overrated author

Stephen King: I’ve only read On Writing since it’s a must-have in every writer’s toolbox and Christine which has to be one of his underrated works when compared to Carrie or The Shining. I started listening to the audiobook version of Misery. He is a brilliant story teller, one of my favorite authors but does his name has to come up all the time?

overrated author

E.L James. and the last one in the list of overrated authors writer of the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon I don’t get why people go nuts over this book/movie. I have endless battles with my friend who is crazy about them. He thinks it’s romantic, I tell him Mr. Grey should get a restraining order! This series invented a whole new level of creepy. How this comes across as good erotica, BDMS, or good writing is beyond me. This is the woman who wrote one of the most hilarious lines in literary works.

  1. Most overrated authors:
    Anything by Walter Scott – I have tried three of his novels and find them practically unreadable;
    Henry James: unutterably grim with this proviso – Portrait of a Lady was at least readable and Turn of the Screw which is one of the best novellas I have ever read.
    James Joyce: impenetrable, pretentious drivel except “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”.
